Black Adam is the origin story of Teth-Adam, a Kahndaqi slave gifted with the powers of the Egyptian gods by the wizard Shazam. 5,000 years ago, Teth-Adam used his powers to free his people from the brutal rule of an evil king. However, overwhelmed by grief and rage after the death of his son, Teth-Adam crossed a line, unleashing his powers in a way that corrupted him and led to his imprisonment.

In the present day, Kahndaq is once again under threat, this time from the Intergang, a criminal organization that controls the country’s resources. Adrianna Tomaz, a young archaeologist, believes that Teth-Adam is the key to saving her people. She and her brother Karim, along with their colleagues Samir and Ishmael, set out to find the tomb of Teth-Adam and release him.

Black Adam is a darker and more violent superhero film than many others. It explores themes of vengeance, corruption, and the consequences of unchecked power. The film also has a strong political message, criticizing colonialism and the exploitation of resources.

Why Black Adam May Not Have Lived Up to Expectations

While Black Adam achieved box office success, it fell short of expectations in some ways. Let’s delve into possible reasons for this:

Oversaturation of Superhero Films: The superhero genre is incredibly saturated, with numerous films released each year. This can lead to audience fatigue and make it difficult for any one film to stand out. Black Adam, arriving after a string of other superhero releases, may have suffered from this effect.
Marketing and Promotion: Some critics argue that the film’s marketing and promotion strategy could have been stronger. The trailers focused heavily on the action sequences and didn’t do enough to develop the character or story. This may have left audiences unsure about what to expect from the film.

Critical Reception: While not universally panned, Black Adam received mixed reviews from critics. Some praised the action sequences and Johnson’s performance, while others criticized the plot, character development, and CGI. This mixed reception may have deterred some audiences from seeing the film.

High Expectations: The film had been in development for several years and Dwayne Johnson’s involvement generated a lot of hype. This high level of anticipation may have set unrealistic expectations that the film ultimately couldn’t meet.

This means the film may not have recouped its production costs solely from theatrical releases.

Here’s a breakdown of the box office collection:

  • United States and Canada: $168.2 million
  • Other territories: $225.1 million

Although Black Adam did not reach its break-even point at the box office, it is still considered a box office success. It was the highest-grossing film of the month of October 2022 and performed well internationally, particularly in China and Korea.
